I Need More Space by buko is my favorite Threadless shirt this week. To me, it’s an intriguing mix of the past and the future- a piece of obsolete technology paired with the astronaut, a figure who always seems to come from a few decades ahead of us. Seeing this figure of excitement and exploration toiling away with a mundane vacuum cleaner is a funny image, the kind that makes you wonder what other chores he’s been busy with (in space, who puts the garbage bins out?). But I think my favorite aspect of the piece is the effortless way it mixes styles. The floppy disk has a crisp, realistic look. Space is delicate, with heavily shaded planets that provide drama and a powdering of distant stars that communicate depth. The spaceman, for his part, is pure cartoon-y goodness. But it all works together in telling a story, and the differing style highlight the size and category contrasts that the humor is built on.
