Threadless’s Blue Jay and Berries
Blue Jay and Berries by rlthull is my favorite Threadless print this week. I like the way it combines a vector, geometric style with a looseness to the strokes that helps the piece to have a feeling of motion about it, as though we’re literally watching as the bird plucks that treasured berry. It has the charms of midcentury art in its stylization, but still feels modern and fresh. For me, a lot of the appeal is in the joy conveyed n the face of the blue jay- not an easy feat with such a crisp, geometric look! But the proportions, positioning, and specific lines around the eye all combine to make the bird appear absolutely delighted at his meal, and it’s enhanced further for the viewer because we can see all the other berries he’ll be happily chowing down on in the near future. The only choice that doesn’t quite work for me is the way the branch appears transparent in some places, still showing the texture of the leaf on its bark. Overall, though, it’s excellent work!
