Threadless’s Magritte

The Threadless catalog isn’t showing any new designs this week, so instead I’ll be highlighting a favorite design from recently added Artist Shops pieces.

Magritte by dracoimagem is an appropriately surreal ode to surrealism. The art references several of Magritte’s elements, from the apple to the bowler hat, a formally dressed gentleman, and of course the famous pipe (and its equally well-known caption). The collage style is a great fit for the theme, and lends itself to creating unusual shape relationships (like the massive apple head) that add to the piece’s humor. There’s something very jaunty about the positioning of the hat, and the way the apple’s leaves poke out from below just so. The odd, relaxed pose of the large mouth feels silly, and the quirky nature of it helps to give the character a lot of personality. This is a fun piece, celebrating art without taking itself too seriously.

Threadless Artist Shops are free to create, and allow artists to set their own prices on products ranging from apparel to accessories and even home decor.
