Pampling’s Frida Calavera

Frida Calavera by NemiMakeIt is one of those designs that just feels right. It makes sense to see Frida Kahlo, an artist whose work frequently explored her heritage, represented as one of Mexico’s most iconic images, the sugar skull. Even better, the similarity of sound between Kahlo and Calavera makes it a bit of a pun. Her distinctive hairstyle and unibrow make the skull easily recognizable, and the way the skull is covered in big, bright flowers both suits the traditional look of the calavera as well as reinforces themes from Kahlo’s own work. I slightly wish there’d been a nod to monkeys (or other animals from her paintings) tucked away in the art somewhere to further unite the two concepts, but it’s an excellent design with wide appeal as-is.
