Threadless: iCYMetriK and more new this week

iCYMetriK by John Tibbott (quick-brown-fox) is my favorite Threadless print this week. I love the way it manages to use a lot of color without feeling overly busy or frantic- the minimalism of the shapes and smooth color transitions make this a design that pleases the eye but never overwhelms it. Instead, this color study feels calming and peaceful, like a series of partially transparent cubes that melt into each other and form something new everywhere they combine. It’s the kind of timeless graphic that could be from any era.

Impossible Love by John Tibbott (quick-brown-fox) won Threadless’s Isometric challenge with its complex arrangement of cubes that form a heart. I assume the title to be a reference to the Impossible Triangle optical illusion, but strangely the shapes look very possible to me, all seated in a three dimensional environment so that sometimes pieces are hidden behind other blocks in the foreground. I think the cube style is what makes the illusion seem to work rather than be truly impossible, perhaps giving too much logical grounding to the way shapes interact. Because from a conceptual standpoint, it’s definitely a stronger idea if the heart shape does feel like an illusion.

Threadless prints new shirts every week, chosen from the designs submitted by and voted on by site members. Most winners earn $1 minimum per item sold (learn more about Threadless artist payments).
