Monsieur Poulet’s Chaos 1

Chaos 1 by Yann Bagot is one of those rare designs that works well even within tight printing restraints. Because of the tension between the balancing rocks and the open air at the top and bottom, the sharp way the art cuts off at the sides adds to the drama of the piece and makes the arrangement of stones look even more precarious. The realism of the rocks comes through loud and clear because of their delicate, moss-like textures, with shadowing that contributes both dimension and the feel of a bright, oppressive sun shining on the structure. I love the way the weight of the piece is carried high, leaving the viewer to feel like they’re watching a slow avalanche in process. It’s dramatic, and in black and white it’s also beautifully sophisticated.
