Camiseteria’s Ancorado (Cinza Mescla)

Ancorado (Cinza Mascla) by Camiseteria and Zakeu Silva does something I love to see in an illustration, containing an entire, rich world within a small space. In this case a quaint little village is crowded onto a ship’s deck, so that roofs, walls, and windows stretch towards the sky instead of sails. Naturally, the town’s inhabitants are deep sea divers in full costume, even peeking at the viewer from the boat’s portholes. In a neat playful touch, the artist makes the birds and divers the same size, for an interesting surreal moment that leaves you wondering what the real proportions of this world might be. Another brilliant choice is the way the moon is roped to a basket like a hot air balloon, adding to the sense of imagination of the piece. While the design is almost entirely grey, bright pops of sea green represent lights, giving the whole illustration the feel of being deep underwater.

Camiseteria winners earn R$800 cash and R$500 in Camiseteria products.
