Monsieur Poulet’s Chute

Chute by Béatrice Menuel has such an odd shape to it that I couldn’t help but be intrigued. The way it domes at one end and loosens at the other put me in mind of a strange jellyfish assembled from a chaotic tangle of limbs, faces, and objects. While all of the characters have a traditional Japanese feel to them, the arrangement feels very fresh and modern. My favorite sections are the patterned fabrics, which seem full of life in the way they curve and contour around the figures they drape across. But the delight of a well-illustrated design this busy is that every viewer will have their own favorite moments, and there’s something worth noticing in every corner.
