Camiseteria’s Starman

Starman by Marcelo Camacho makes a strong first impression. The combination of the minimal Bowie illustration, universe imagery within it, and large, bold lightning bolt make its intentions as a tribute to the musician very clear, and immediately remind the viewer of songs like Space Oddity. Unfortunately, I think the art is less impressive on a close up viewing because of the color choices used. In most contexts, the motion of the lightning bolt’s strokes and the drip effect used might have seemed expressive and interesting. But because of the bright red color used for this, and the fact that the bolt ends in an explosion of drips where a small astronaut is positioned, it ends up looking very gross and gory. Instead of a cool space exploration vibe, there’s a real darkness and a sense that some awful injury has befallen the spaceman, It’s not the kind of visual most Bowie fans are looking for in a tribute fans, in my opinion.
