Camiseteria’s Bee Cool

Bee Cool by Pedro Fernandes is interesting to me because it’s such an inversion of the trope you usually see with bees. So often bees are used to represent hard work, buzzing from flower to flower with diligence in service of their hive. And if not that, they’re threats who wield their stingers as weapons. So it’s refreshing to see this very different kind of bee here, a t00-cool slacker who wears a cap, reclines lazily among flower petals, and drinks his pollen out of a striped straw. Instead of buzzing from task to task, this guy is humming to himself as he lazes in the sun. It’s a sweet life suited to the honey he creates. Text reinforces the theme with a couple of cute puns, and I like the way it has started to integrate with the rest of the drawing through those twisting vines and the honey splatter (though I think it would have been even cooler if that effect had been taken further). Very solid work over all.
