Monsieur Poulet’s French Colombes

monsieur poulet french colombes

French Colombes (which translates to French Doves) by Oeilbleu was the winner of Monsieur Poulet‘s Ensemble contest, reflecting the competition’s theme of togetherness with a pair of embracing doves. The use of one ink color and negative space is instantly appealing, but in this case also something that gives me a lot of deja vu-  the artwork has a strong similarity to the Threadless shirt Huggers. What makes this difficult is that Huggers seems to be both the design that came first and the superiorly crafted piece. With its rougher style, French Colombes succeeds primarily because the concept of doves broadcasts a more political message than a pair of bears does. I’d have liked to see this design learn more from what came before it and really work to surpass the craftsmanship of Huggers, rather than just exist at or below its level.

Winners at Monsieur Poulet earn 2 Euros per item sold, for a total of up to 2000 Euros.
