WAMI Swag’s Always Winter

Always Winter by teesgeex won WAMI Swag’s Cold design contest, and I think it works really well as a winter-themed piece that can be worn year round. I like the way it takes the idea of cold and instead of just applying it to the season or weather, it projects it onto icy personality types. Game of Thrones’s frostbitten Night King is a great stand in for the concept because his blue color makes him seem to embody frozenness… although I do wonder if the rapidly decreasing popularity of the GoT franchise (a bummer of a last season will do that) might harm the design’s long-term prospects. At any rate, the mad enthusiasm of this character, whose giant grin takes up nearly half his face, is endearing and makes the cold feel worth being excited about. It’s a fun piece, and the snowy details set just the right mood.

WAMI Swag’s How the Grinch Slapped Christmas

How the Grinch Slapped Christmas by illustrandy was WAMI Swag’s Tee’s the Season contest winner, and it’s easy to see why it resonated. The holiday season can be stressful and unpleasant in some ways, so it feels refreshing and cathartic to see it expressed so plainly. Plus, this entire scenario is very on-brand for the Grinch, whose too-bright neon green color clashes with the red background in a way that screams both holiday colors and discomfort. The original meme this piece parodies shows Batman slapping Robin, and the fact that the meme framing is so recognizable helps prevent the design from seeming too harsh. Even heroes have their limits…

The temperature is dropping in WAMI’s neck of the woods, and we’ve got *cold* on the brain. Snowboards; Coors; a dead body; the DeLorean upon re-entry to the time continuum… Whatever gives you the shivers — and not the kind Ed Sheeran sings about (this is a family site). Bonus points for hidden messages. #WinterIsComing

Enter before December 24th, 2021 for your chance to win. One winner will earn a $200 prize. Any designs sold on WAMI Swag also earn the artist 20% of each sale.

WAMI Swag’s 20s Ghostface

20s Ghostface by illustrandy combines the modern horror icon from the Scream series with the retro cartoon look of the “That’s all, folks” ending graphic, and it’s an appealing mix. Part of the fun is that, as horror goes, Scream has more nods to humor than the average scary movie, so a cartoon doesn’t feel entirely out of place. There’s a kind of dangerous mayhem in many classic cartoons, and one could easily imagine this killer indulging in some falling piano finishing moves. But it’s also funny because of the difference in phone type between the two eras- while a modern villain might torment their prey via a handheld or cell phone, there’s humor in imagining that an old-timey killer might have to resort to a party line or having the operator direct their call. The bloody take on the cartoon’s circular background is a great touch as well.

WAMI Swag’s Conca the 13th

Concha the 13th by BebikDesigns is WAMI Swag’s Cotton Brawl VII winner, and it’s definitely well-crafted. The character’s enlarged hands emphasize his physicality (and help focus attention on those snacks), strong highlights and shadows give dimension and add drama, and there’s even a realistic smoke effect creating a background (also repeated to give the coffee some steam). But it’s also a piece that requires two specific bits of knowledge, and I’m curious how common this information actually is with the general public. One big element to know is that the “Con Chah…” text is approximating the music that plays in these movies- as a casual horror consumer, I guessed this to be the case, but don’t actually remember the sound strongly. The other tidbit, that the specific pastry the killer is holding is called a Concha, actually took me a Google search to get. I don’t doubt that they’re more common in some areas than others, though, so I hope those in the sweet spot of those two combined bits of knowledge are able to find and enjoy this design.
