Tee Contest Year in Review(s) 2012

It’s been a good year for t-shirt design contests, with Threadless and Design By Humans both releasing a lot of great work, and nice designs showing up on smaller sites as well. Here’s a look back at the best design each month for this past year:

604Republic’s Imperial Breakfast

604Republic taps into the lighter side of the dark side of the force with Imperial Breakfast. Instead of crushing the skulls of his enemies, Darth merely desires to start his day with some fresh-squeezed juice. It’s a very relateable answer to the question of what you’d do if you had that kind of power, and makes the character seem both silly and more human. But I think what really cements this design as something special is the attention to detail- I love the Death Star bowl of cornflakes and little Jawa spoon. Excellent work!

Winners at 604Republic have two options: 1) $500 cash and $1 per shirt sold, or 2) 15% of the retail sale price on each product with your design sold.

604Republic: Open for voting

Hot on the heels of its open call for entries, 604Republic is now collecting votes on the designs in contention to print. Here’s a look at two of my favorites so far:

Fall of Rome by Mathijs Vissers is a wonderfully unexpected take on geek culture, keying in on history buffs and the kids who took Latin instead of a language people actually speak. The subject matter is iconic and traditional, but the drawing style refreshes it and keeps things fun. I like how it touches on so much about their culture- sculpture, architecture, battle and a scroll that indicates more intellectual pursuits. Celebrating what made a society great at the same time as you show its destruction, very cool.

OVNI by Toni Garcia Matas is another design that caught my eye, a collision between one of the iconic Space Invaders and a more realistic little green man in a flying saucer. It’s a cute reminder of how weird the SI shapes really were, and the plain distress in the alien’s body language is hilarious. I think most sci-fi fans would get a kick out of the idea that there are so many aliens rushing towards Earth that a few are having minor collisions up in the rush hour traffic of the outer reaches of the atmosphere.

Winners at 604Republic have two options: 1) $500 cash and $1 per shirt sold, or 2) 15% of the retail sale price on each product with your design sold.

604Republic’s t-shirt design contest launches

604Republic has made a name for themselves as a site by picking up some great geek-themed designs, many of which are on a second wind after printing on one of the tee-a-day sites. They’re expanding their reach with a design contest, which means we may be able to expect to see more designs printing there for the first time anywhere.

604 is looking for designs that fit their “Gear for Every Geek” tagline- that means nerdy TV and movie references, video games, etc. During the 75 day voting period, designs should NOT be featured on any other contest or site.

And the rewards for winning are pretty nice! Winners have two options: 1) $500 cash and $1 per shirt sold, or 2) 15% of the retail sale price on each product with your design sold.
