Monsieur Poulet’s Captain Sunk

I feel like every time I click over to Monsieur Poulet, I see something that makes me smile. Most recently, it was Captain Sunk by Lucasvarela that caught my interest. While a drowning sailor might seem like depressing subject matter for a t-shirt, the artist takes a light-hearted approach to the moment. He’s almost set up like an ambassador to a strange world- fish, eels, and octopi gaze at him in awe, though his shut eyes see nothing. But of course the real fun is in noticing all the little details. I’m amused by the debris that accompanies his sinking body, canned sardines and crab meat stand out right away (as do the multiple bottles of booze). And hey, isn’t a life preserver supposed to be buoyant? It’s also neat to see an anchor literally anchoring the design at the bottom. All around a fun, unique piece.

Monsieur Poulet’s Made in France

Monsieur Poulet hit another one out of the ballpark with their recent print Made in France by Annette Marnat. The storybook style has the sharp edges of cut paper, but also soft shading and textures that make you want to reach right in and touch. And it’s cool the way the design reflects on the site itself- Monsieur Poulet becomes this prize-winning, almost superhero-like huge rooster who stands protectively above a human kid. Powerful and friendly, and his little bow ensures that it doesn’t veer awkwardly into looking threatening. I feel like this has the kind of throwback look you’d expect to see on, like, antique flour packaging or something. Just totally classic and appealing. Good work, France!

Monsieur Poulet’s Trees are Man’s Best Friends

So, Monsieur Poulet‘s newest print is Trees are Man’s Best Friends by Grootfontein, and it’s pretty darn awesome. The simple logic of the message is well-matched in the art’s clean and friendly style. I like the goofy grins the trees are boasting, and the smug contentment of the hippy. The free-wheeling cursive of the text sets a nice tone, that just because the tee’s goal is serious doesn’t mean it can’t also be fun (and even silly!). Plus, the color palette is bright and perfect for the season, capturing trees at their most vibrant. Though part of me wouldn’t mind seeing a Trees are Jerks sequel where the same guy has a rake and all the trees are bare!

Monsieur Poulet’s QUADRI contest

Monsieur Poulet‘s house style has traditionally tended towards the flat shapes and quirky personality of 1950s illustrations, but they’re stepping a bit out of their comfort zone for the QUADRI contest. This competition removes the site’s usual color restrictions, letting artists go nuts with gradients, photography, watercolors and more. It will definitely be interesting to see what design wins out!

Monsieur Poulet’s On the Road

Monsieur Poulet has a habit of putting out really fun and crazy illustrated tees, and On the Road by Gaban definitely continues that trend. Two rad cartoon dudes hang out of their car as they ride, each sporting the kind of unlikely flair (a toothbrush? an arrow through the head?) that makes you want to keep searching for new surprises. In a nice move, even the car becomes a character, with headlights that match its rider’s eyes. Whatever these two are up to, it’s going to be awesome.

Monsieur Poulet’s Bicyclette contest

Monsieur Poulet thinks bicycles are pretty rad, and that’s why they’re having a Bicyclette contest. They’ve teamed up with RESPIRE (who fight against air pollution) and Atelier Sans Frontieres (who recycle and repair bikes) to celebrate everything that makes bikes awesome, in t-shirt form.

Monsieur Poulet’s Classic Gamer

Classic Gamer by der Grootfontein is a recent print at Monsieur Poulet that really blows me away. It’s rare to see a feminine take on the video game tee, and there’s something wonderfully subtle about this one. I love that the single game reference is that universal directional pad graphic, carefully disguised as an earring. It’s a nice take on the spread of gaming’s audience- it used to just be fanboys and kids, but these days even your Mom probably plays a little Farmville or Bejeweled. For the younger ladies with wider tastes who have grown up with games, a shirt like this is a cool way to represent that aspect of your personality without sacrificing fashion.

Winners earn 2 Euros per item sold, for a total of up to 2000 Euros.
