Threadless’s Pants Optional design contest

Threadless wants to keep things casual… very casual! with the new Pants Optional design competition. Here’s what they’re looking for…

This new work from home lifestyle is weird, sure, but we’re all making the most of it. And who’s to say we can’t do it like network TV news anchors and make all of our video conference calls pants optional! Join us, friends, and let’s show the world how to do remote working CORRECTLY.

We task you to create epic tee designs around this new take on virtual meetings – ones that let your freak, loner, tech wizard, mom, creative, queen, dad flag fly. Designs that even the most modest of folk would be proud to show off during their Zoom meetings, Google Hangouts, and FaceTime face-offs. Whether weird, wildly inappropriate for the workplace, a statement to your current mood given the state of things, or a protest of meetings entirely, we welcome your most creative designs that tell it like it is. Because this is ultimately an anything goes type of challenge. We can’t wait to see what you dream up!

This contest opens to entries on April 17th, 2020 and ends on May 1st. One winner will earn a $500 Threadless gift code. All designers printed will earn up to $7 per item sold (learn more about Threadless artist payments).

Threadless’s Botany design contest

Threadless‘s new Botany design competition wants you to take a fresh look at plant life. Here’s what they’re looking for…

Ahh the study of plants. How do plants work? What makes them grow, sprout, thrive, and survive? Behold Botany, the study and science of plant life. Botanical illustration, depicting the form, color, and details of plant life, can be traced back to somewhere between 50 and 70 CE with an illustrated book by Greek botanist Pedanius Dioscorides. It was used to help readers identify plant species for medicinal purposes. Remember, most of modern medicine is derived from plants.

Now’s the time to get to the root of your illustrative craft. Gather your worthy houseplant specimens and give us an educational depiction of flora and fauna. Or flex your flower power and create a modern take on these historical drawings. Be imaginative! Your plant creations could be based on the real thing or completely made up in a pure fantastical depiction of plant life on another planet, or from your favorite film, book, childhood home. You decide how these plants are revived!

This contest opens to entries on April 10th, 2020 and ends on April 24th. One winner will earn a $500 Threadless gift code. All designers printed will earn up to $7 per item sold (learn more about Threadless artist payments).

Threadless’s Memphis Design t-shirt design contest

Think retro 80s looks for Threadless‘s new Memphis Design t-shirt design competition. Here’s what they’re looking for…

A truly hot mix of plastic, color, and abstract, asymmetric shapes and squiggles, the Memphis Design style epitomized the look of the 1980s. Originally created by an Italian design and architecture firm called The Memphis Group, the movement manifested itself in a wide array of bold, postmodern artworks, furniture, fabrics, ceramics, glass, metal objects, and even household items. The style was once called “a shotgun wedding between Bauhaus and Fisher-Price,” by a design columnist*, and yet was heavily collected by the late, great David Bowie.

So gather your neon, pastel, and primary colors to create a design in true Memphis style. Revive this postmodern aesthetic with chunky geometric shapes, squiggles, and peculiar all-over-print patterns that the Starman himself would swoon over. Whether you lean into pure ‘80s color schemes or create your own retro appeal, be sure to explore how different shapes and colors can fit together or how one repeated shape becomes an ideal background for your design. It’s time to let symbols, shapes, and color do the talking as you give us your Memphis best.

This contest opens to entries on April 3rd, 2020 and ends on April 17th. One winner will earn a $500 Threadless gift code. Also, all designers printed will earn up to $7 per item sold (learn more about Threadless artist payments).

Threadless’s Illustrative Lettering design contest

Typography has personality in Threadless‘s new Illustrative Lettering design competition. Here’s what they’re looking for…

Whether drawn by hand or designed in software, elaborate typography and illustrative lettering is all the rage. It’s an immersive way to give fonts personality and make text speak even louder through design. Maybe the word “spring” is covered in blossoming flowers or a phrase about writing is designed out of pencils. Sometimes literal, other times abstract, illustrative lettering puts a delightful design twist on language.

Pump up your typography with some illustrative pizzazz for this letter-loving challenge. Make art that speaks on two levels—the typography itself and the design elements that enhance it. Go literal or interpretive with your artwork, but either way, let the typography take center stage. From words made out of what they are to phrases that illustrate their meaning, craft clever designs that communicate. Grab a dictionary, thesaurus, and pencil, and let your designs speak!

This contest opens to entries on March 6th, 2020 and ends on March 20th. One winner will earn $1000 cash and a $500 Threadless gift code. Also, all designers printed will earn up to $7 per item sold (learn more about Threadless artist payments).
