Threadless’s Fire design contest

Threadless‘s journey through the four elements continues with their new Fire t-shirt design competition. Here’s what they’re looking for…

When early humans discovered fire approximately 2 million years ago, they used it to stay warm, cook their food, and ward off predatory animals. Fire remains essential to human survival today, however, when mishandled, it can wreak all sorts of havoc.

For this elemental challenge, use the thought of fire to illuminate your mind. Think about what it actually does. It can light a pathway through darkness. It clears away underbrush so soil can be cultivated and fosters new growth. It burns, whether you want it to or not. Fire has also been used throughout art and culture to symbolize concepts including passion, rebirth, and even hell. Dare we say disco inferno? Any of these ideas can prevail in a new design inspired by fire.

Visually speaking, there are a million directions you can go. The concept of fire gives you a unique opportunity to experiment with textures such as smoke and burnt surfaces. There’s also nothing more alluring than the reddish-orange glow of a flame. Just ask a moth!

This contest opens to entries on October 23rd, 2020 and ends on November 6th. One winner will earn $500 cash and a $500 Threadless gift code. All designers printed will earn up to $7 per item sold (learn more about Threadless artist payments).

Threadless’s Snow Globe design contest

Get ready for the upcoming season with Threadless‘s Snow Globe t-shirt design competition. Here’s what they’re looking for…

Few objects capture the blissful enchantment of the holiday season like a snow globe, whose contents burst to life in blizzardy glory with only a gentle shake. Now that the holiday season is racing toward our chimneys, let’s look to snow globes for some yuletide inspiration for the next Design Challenge.

What are the key features of a snow globe? It encases a miniaturized scene within a glass dome. It’s filled with water, “snow,” and glitter. It’s a classic toy still beloved by children around the world. With those details fresh in your mind, create a new design that recognizes the holiday season in a unique way.

The possibilities are endless. You could spoof a yearly tradition such as gift giving, illustrate an abominable snowman shoveling his driveway, or show shoppers duking it out in a department store. Whatever you decide, consider framing everything in a glass orb, or incorporating snowy and glittery details to create your version of a winter wonderland.

This contest opens to entries on October 16th, 2020 and ends on October 30th. One winner will earn $500 cash and a $500 Threadless gift code. All designers printed will earn up to $7 per item sold (learn more about Threadless artist payments).

Threadless’s Hygge design contest

Get cozy with Threadless‘s new Hygge t-shirt design competition. Here’s what they’re looking for…

In stressful, uncertain times like these, it’s important to appreciate the fleeting moments of comfort and coziness, since they can be few and far between. That brings us to the theme of this week’s Design Challenge: hygge (pronounced hue-gah), the Danish practice of creating a pleasant environment that promotes emotional wellbeing.

Think of things that money can’t buy that make you feel content. A relaxing stroll through nature. Nuzzling your fluffy cat on the nose. Losing yourself in a good book. Primal screaming out of your driver-side window. Whatever it is, use those ideas to inspire a new design that brings you peace, serenity, and fulfillment. Consider using soft and neutral colors for a chill vibe, or go the complete opposite route with deep, dreary hues that show you find comfort in darkness and chaos.

This contest opens to entries on October 9th, 2020 and ends on October 23rd. One winner will earn $500 cash and a $500 Threadless gift code. All designers printed will earn up to $7 per item sold (learn more about Threadless artist payments).

Threadless’s Retro Ringers design contest

Vintage looks are back in style with Threadless‘s Retro Ringers shirt design competition. Here’s what they’re looking for…

Just like feathery haircuts, high-powered muscle cars, and roller discos, ringer tees were all the rage in the 1970s—especially within the burgeoning rock ‘n’ roll subculture. With a little imagination, the ringer tee can reemerge from the back of closets to take back its former glory.

What looks best on t-shirts with contrasting collars and sleeve bands? For inspiration, first think about graphic styles that were popular when ringers were at their peak: punchy phrases (like Keep on Truckin’) in bubble letters, retro ads for places and things, and charmingly garish patterns. Or maybe it’s for your favorite imaginary band? For even stronger throwback vibes, consider using bold primary and secondary colors, or making your design look “lived-in” with cream tones, a vintage palette, and maybe even a little grit.

This contest opens to entries on October 2nd, 2020 and ends on October 16th. One winner will earn $500 cash and a $500 Threadless gift code. All designers printed will earn up to $7 per item sold (learn more about Threadless artist payments).

Threadless’s Earth design contest

Think of the element, not the planet, for Threadless‘s new Earth t-shirt design competition. Here’s what they’re looking for…

Just a handful of planets away from the Sun, Earth is where we call home. But Earth in the context of elements is SO much more than a planetary object in our solar system.

For this Challenge, we’re looking for Earth as an element, and what makes this weird place so damned magical. Look to Pagan and Native American traditions and interpretations of Earth. Like Water, Fire, and Air, Earth is a fundamental elemental component, and in a lot of ways is what makes us US. We’re all connected to it, and because of that, connected to each other. Without the Earth element, there would be no life. Like… WHOA!

Consider what makes the Earth as an element so special and unique to us. Or turn that on its head, and go with silly, funny, or perfectly stupid. Look to alchemy, mountains and valleys, seeds, growth and decay, forests, regeneration, and so much more, all interpreted brilliantly through your artistic lens.

This contest opens to entries on September 25th, 2020 and ends on October 9th. One winner will earn $500 cash and a $500 Threadless gift code. All designers printed will earn up to $7 per item sold (learn more about Threadless artist payments).

Threadless’s Buttons design contest

Shirts are great, but sometimes it takes a new format to reach a new audience with your message. Artists get exactly that opportunity in Threadless‘s new Buttons design competition. Here’s what they’re looking for…

According to the Busy Beaver Button Museum right here in moderately sunny Chicago, buttons were patented way back in 1896 and have since complimented important movements, political campaigns, and so much more!

Buttons can be a million things to different people, which makes them an incredibly versatile way to get a message across – not to mention a unique fashion accessory. Sometimes simple, other times fun or funny, buttons can also be part of an important political or societal statement that helps unite people. Consider bold colors, high contrast, iconic graphics, and succinct messages (if you use words), all of which work well in a tiny-ish form factor. So gather ‘round, friends, and get your button on with this Design Challenge.

This contest opens to entries on September 18th, 2020 and ends on October 2nd. One winner will earn $500 cash and a $500 Threadless gift code. All designers printed will earn $1.75 on each button sale and up to $7 per other product sold (learn more about Threadless artist payments).

Threadless’s Tarot design contest

Occult art might be in the cards for Threadless‘s Tarot shirt design competition. Here’s what they’re looking for…

Some say tarot is a silly card game, but we beg to differ. Whether you’re a practitioner of tarot card readings, simply a fan of getting read, or thought we were talking about a root vegetable up until this point, look to the art and ideas in tarot cards and fortune telling for inspiration for this Design Challenge. The cards consist of a wide cast of characters and symbols, all full of meaning: The Magician, The High Priestess, The Empress and Emperor, The Lovers, Wheel of Fortune (not the TV game show, to be clear), the Devil, The Moon, and, of course, Death, among many others. But you need not take this challenge literally.

What would YOU like tarot card imagery and symbolism to be? Imagine if coffee were a minor arcana depicting cups? Where might video games fit? Ramen? Pride? We can’t wait to see what you have on deck for this Challenge!

This contest opens to entries on September 11th, 2020 and ends on September 25th. One winner will earn $500 cash and a $500 Threadless gift code. All designers printed will earn up to $3 per sticker sold (learn more about Threadless artist payments).
