Shirt.Woot Derby #6: Fake Me Out To The Ballgame

The theme has been announced for the next Shirt.Woot Derby: Fake Me Out To The Ballgame. The description is a little odd, so I’m just going to quote the whole thing in the interest of clarity:

“With the NFL, NHL, and college football seasons starting and the baseball pennant races tightening up, September is a helluva time to be a sports fan. But what if your team stinks? What if you don’t like any actual sports? Make up your own. And then show us what you picked up at the imaginary team store. Remember: don’t use somebody else’s logo, don’t submit a two-sided design, and do NOT design a shirt for a Woot-themed team. Otherwise, game on.”

So I guess the theme is pretend and sports? I would guess that imaginary team logos, depictions of non-existent sports and things of that nature would work. I’m tempted to try a logo out…

Submissions for this contest are due between Friday at noon and Wednesday at noon. The top three will be printed and sold over the weekend, earning their creators $200 and an additional $2 per shirt sold after the first day.

The last derby had a number of really nice designs, so I expect this week to be even better.

Shirt.Woot Derby Update: Runners Up to be Printed!

Shirt.Woot‘s Derbies have produced some pretty great shirts, but the best looking designs don’t always win. This was further exaggerated by the fact that Wooters often added and subtracted votes at the last minute (with the goal of causing a tie, leading to a 2 shirts for $10 sale), possibly leading to winners that didn’t reflect the true preference of most voters.

Both of these issues have been corrected by a rules change: as of this week, vote totals for the top four are hidden. And, even better, the top three will all be printed and sold (Friday, Saturday and Sunday at midnight).

And really, this couldn’t have happened at a better time- currently, three of the top four are well-drawn and well-suited to a shirt (which is much better than the competition’s average). As the new voting system attracts new artists, I expect the quality level to rise even higher in future weeks.

As always, derby winners (and those who submit work without entering the derby) will receive $200 for the first day of sales. Every sale after that point will earn the artist an additional $2 per shirt, which is typically a substantial windfall.

Shirt.Woot Derby: Light

It looks like Shirt.Woot is listening to the community- this week, they’ve announced the theme of their next derby a full day before submissions will be accepted.

Shirt designs must involve the theme Light. Additionally, designs must be printed on either Kelly Green, Royal Blue or Red shirts.

As always, the design with the most votes will be printed, earning the designer $200. The designer will also receive $2 per shirt sold after the initial day of sales (this amount is typically several times the original prize).

Shirt.Woot Derby: Maps

Shirt.Woot‘s weekly derby is currently accepting map shirt designs. This week they’re being pretty quick about rejecting designs that don’t fit the theme, so hopefully this week will be controversy-free.

There are a few new rules that potential submitters should be aware of:

1) No designs on black or asphalt tees will be accepted (this is both to prevent monotony and to preserve Shirt.Woot’s remaining stock of those very popular colors).

2) Voters are now allowed to “un-vote” for designs that they no longer like as much.

3) Shirts will only be printed on the front (no more two-sided designs).

The new rules and increased presence of moderators is definitely a step in the right direction, and I think the new crop of designs reflects that. There are already a few promising shirts being scored, and it’s still the first day.

Shirt.Woot Derby #2: Heat

Another Friday, another Shirt.Woot Derby. This time the theme is Heat, and entries that rely on Woot logos and culture are banned. Another improvement to the format is that entries are now displayed according to how recently they were submitted (instead of according to popularity, which kept a lot of mediocre work scoring highly last week).

It might take some more time before the voters start to get a grasp of what works on a shirt (currently a lot of voters seem to be voting on thumbnail images without enlarging to see shirt placement) but I think this week’s winner is almost guaranteed to be more interesting than last week (grey shapes on a white shirt? sigh).

As always, the winner’s shirt will be printed next Friday, earning the designer $200 plus $2 for every shirt sold after the first day.

Shirt.Woot Derby: One

The inaugural Shirt.Woot Derby has begun, and is now accepting entries that fit the theme of One. If I were a betting person, I’d also say that the entry most likely to win this one will have some kind of Woot theme to it (based on comments on prior shirts in the forums).

It should be a fun contest- there’s certainly a lot of enthusiasm behind the concept, if not a lot of skill so far. And early entries definitely have the advantage, since the winner is determined by how many people click the I Want It button. The longer your shirt is voted on, the higher your score will be.

Submissions are accepted until Wednesday at noon, with voting open until Thursday at noon. The winning shirt will be printed on Friday, with the designer receiving $200 (and $2 per shirt for every shirt sold after the initial day of sales).

If this theme isn’t to your liking, remember to check back at the Derby next Friday at noon. The Derby is planned to be a weekly event, so there are sure to be a lot of winners and a lot of fun shirts.

Shirt.Woot: Daily Tees With a Techie Twist

If you’ve been on the internet for any amount of time, then you know Woot. They’ve gained fame as the cheapest place to get good technology products, but you have to be pretty quick on the draw- one product goes on sale each night at midnight, and if they sell out, you’re out of luck.

It’s been a very successful business strategy, and Woot has recently adapted it to a new medium- t-shirts. It’s true that others have pursued a similar business plan in this market (Uneetee and Shirt A Day), but Woot brings something to the table that the others have so far lacked: a huge, loyal audience. Last night, the site ran it’s first regularly scheduled shirt, Sore Thumbs, and it sold its full print run of 500 shirts in less than an hour, an amount that other sites take weeks and even months to sell. I expect that the site will only grow from there, especially since shirts are sold for the almost unbelievable price of $10 (and yes, that includes shipping).

Needless to say, an operation of this scope is in need of a constant influx of new shirts. Shirt.Woot is currently looking for experienced designers to purchase shirt designs from. They pay out a flat fee for the first night of sales, and for each shirt sale after that point you’ll receive money per shirt sold. Yes, you heard that right- shirts can be sold even after the initial run of 500 sells out (I’ll provide more information on this later in the week). They are also flexible with designers who would like to sell their shirt design on their own at a later date, which is a huge plus.

Non-professional designers aren’t left out in the cold, either- a Derby will be held each Friday, and each week one designer will have their work printed and sold on the site. I’ll have more information on that as it becomes available.
