Shirt.Woot’s Sci-Fi Shirts derby voting highlights

The future looked bright (and dark, and funny…) in Shirt.Woot‘s Sci-Fi Shirts derby. As you’d expect, pop culture references to the major sci-fi franchises were very much in style, though there’s also a smattering of designs that play with broad sci-fi concepts instead of specifics. Here’s a look at two current voting underdogs that I think could use some more attention…

Klaatu Barada St. Nikto by EwingKlipspringer might be pretty darn early for the holidays (it’s not even Halloween yet!) but this is a retro reference that would give a lot of older geeks a very merry Christmas.

Sc-Fi-Fest by thehookshot translates some major sci-fi properties into band logos, a joke that becomes even funnier with the “I Survived…” title that highlights how deadly those franchises can be to their minor characters.

This derby continues through Thursday at noon. The top three vote-getters will each earn $1000 cash and $2 per item sold. Additionally, other designs will be selected and sold for $2 per item each. Both top vote-getters and selected designs will be sold in a future Plus sale.

Shirt.Woot’s ShirtCon derby voting highlights

Shirt.Woot prepped their fans for convention season with the ShirtCon Shirts derby, packing entries with both concepts drawn from the convention experience and references to the pop culture properties that those conventions celebrate. Here’s a look at two current voting underdogs that I think could use some more attention…

Syllablaze by chachachino turns Ghost Rider into a Ghost Writer, making for an entertainingly badass portrait of a struggling writer.

Retrocon by mekazoo delivers both excellent retro style and a smart, silly punchline that should appeal to fans of nostalgia.

This derby continues through Thursday at noon. The top three vote-getters will each earn $1000 cash and $2 per item sold. Additionally, other designs will be selected and sold for $2 per item each. Both top vote-getters and selected designs will be sold in a future Plus sale.

Expect an influx of futuristic fan favorites in Shirt.Woot‘s newest derby theme…

Starting Thursday at noon: Derby #673: Sci-Fi Shirts

Aliens and spaceships and lasers, Oh my! Derby #673 will focus on the wonderfully wide worlds of science fiction. (Which, by the way is a lot more than Star Wars, Star Trek, Hitchhiker, Firefly, and Dr. Who. So let’s not get too myopic). Designs can include everything from common sci-fi tropes like aliens and stuff, to parodies of sci-fi pop culture. No cream tees.

This derby begins Thursday at noon and continues through next Thursday at noon. The top three vote-getters will each earn $1000 and $2 per item sold after the first day of sales. Those winners will be sold on Friday (1st), Saturday (2nd), and Sunday (3rd). Shirt.Woot’s Animal Warfare derby voting highlights

Shirt.Woot had creatures of all shapes and sizes sizing each other up in the Animal Warfare derby. Most designs took a cartooned approach, but more illustrative and vectored approaches are represented as well. Here’s a look at two current voting underdogs that I think could use some more attention…

Swan vs. Swan: The Punctuation War by thatrobert is a cool way of using type, and the question marks make perfect swan necks.

dragonyarn by ApeLad is an incredibly effective drawing that delivers both an action scene and lots of detail. I love how well the yarn is represented in the soft, nubby teeth and fiber effect in the string.

This derby continues through Thursday at noon. The top three vote-getters will each earn $1000 cash and $2 per item sold. Additionally, other designs will be selected and sold for $2 per item each. Both top vote-getters and selected designs will be sold in a future Plus sale.

Shirt.Woot’s Nearly NSFW derby voting highlights

Shirt.Woot asked artists to veer close to the edge of good taste and respectability with their Nearly NSFW derby. Language, sexual themes and rude gestures were especially popular topics. Here’s a look at two current voting underdogs that I think could use some more attention…

Elmer? Ewwww! by EwingKlipspringer keeps things simple with a glue gag that will make you see crafting in a new light. The glue’s shocked expression is what really sells this one.

Bad Fruit by BlairJCampbell has a great sense of fun about it, and I love the reveal of the pile of fruit skins in the background. My only criticism is that the unpeeled banana really ought to be much lighter than bright yellow to make it read more clearly as unpeeled.

This derby continues through Thursday at noon. The top three vote-getters will each earn $1000 cash and $2 per item sold. Additionally, other designs will be selected and sold for $2 per item each. Both top vote-getters and selected designs will be sold in a future Plus sale.
